Random Abstract

This is an abstract that I wrote for a paper, I may one day write the paper for:

The art of body modification as self-expression has been increasing over the years, with a rise starting in the 1990s. Many types of people are changing their bodies whether it be piercings, tattoos, gauging, or branding because they feel it is a way to express themselves and change the body that we live in, not because they want to be looked at as rebellious. Where it can be argued that people who are getting these modifications occasionally are part of groups and the changes will be catered toward that affiliation, they are still a choice and choosing to express your belonging in that for is a form of self-expression. Few people go out and change their bodies just intending to anger someone else. The pain that is endured with body modification, whether it be a small pin prick or several hundred, the experience is also part of the expression knowing that in order to express yourself on your body, there is a cost, but in the end it all seems to be worth it. In the past tattoos were giving for showing status in society, and where in some cultures this may be the case, in American culture the changes are much more self oriented. Tattoos and piercings have been seen for hundreds of years in African tribes and were even used by the Nazis on the Jewish. Some of the ideas are still taken into consideration today, but are becoming more acceptable to society because they are seen as self-expression, which is less harmful. My paper will be addressing the idea of using it as self-expression, and why it is not used as rebellion, which is what some people may see it as.
